About FPCC

The club started in Finsbury Park, London, England, in 1883 and took its name from the area it served; we have been in continuous existence ever since.

In those early days, cycling was the new activity of the gentry and was considered very fashionable. It was a time of great inventiveness and experimentation and all types of machines were constructed, especially for couples, with various kinds of tandem and ‘side by side’ tricycles taking to the road.

Naturally, competitive juices began to flow leading to all kinds of racing activity. This upset the embryo ‘motoring lobby’ and it wasn't long before cycle racing on the highway was banned by act of parliament, driving the cycle racing fraternity ‘underground’ for several decades. During this period clandestine races were held on secret courses and great sport was had by racers, and the police who tried to catch them in the act of ‘riding furiously’.

Eventually races against the watch became common as cyclists started in their races at one minute intervals in an attempt to disguise their true activity. Thus, the British Time Trial was born with Finsbury Park CC in the vanguard of the movement. Today, Finsbury Park CC is still a progressive club with the interests of all cyclists very much at its core. Our members take part in most branches of cycling and we are active in the promotion of races and the management of the sport at local and district level.
