Race Report

Below are some of the highlights for recent events in which Finsbury Parkers have been doing battle.

August 3rd

More catching up on recent results. This from Kevin and Sam who were denied their full spoils by a mysterious no-show….

VICTORIA CC TWO UP 19th |July

The well published return grudge match from the drubbing dished out at the MAD two up was not to be.

Team Baker – Freeley did not arrive on the start ramp at their allotted start time of 09.22 for round two.

I believe there DNS was down to having the cheery personality of Baker riding shotgun in the team car, and a light sprinkle of rain, plus adding into the factor that team Megan – Parker were looking the part on their warm up, and had the air about them that the race was theirs for the taking.

The bikes riding on the roof of team Baker – Freely Volvo were never removed, and apology given to the bemused organiser Christine Yareham that they would be a DNS for both events.

That just left the hard men of the race to fight it out, and Sam and I duly returned a 27.57 for the 10.2 mile E1/10A course.

Winning team were Nick Dunkley and Joe Empson Anglia Velo with 25.00.

While Hugh was on holiday and I was away in France, the Float CC held their Annual Float 25 on the floatiest day of the year during a Lorry Convoy festival.

But I’m not bitter. Well done to those who took advantage. Dave sent this…

Shaftesbury CC E2/50c 26th July

Very hot and light wind. Must have been good as Hutch knocked a couple of mins off the comp record with 1:35:27.

I've had a cold for the last 10 days but managed my second fastest 50 ever with 1:48:35.

Dan shaved a few secs off his PB, oh and a few mins too, for 1:55:46.

Ian B flew to the turn but suffered in the final few miles to record 1:57:35

Dan said we won the team prize, but I haven't checked the maths.

I started the Icknield RC F1/50 the next day but felt totally drained and packed.

Another good day, though perhaps too humid.

I saw Neal out on the road looking good. Not sure how he felt about his 2:01:42.

Malcolm is listed as a DNF too, though I didn't see him there.

And here’s what Hugh’s been up to….

Just had a great week of racing, starting with...

Southend Wheelers 50, E21/50 Sunday 13th July

Not an easy day but not too much headwind sections, the sun shone and this is a nice part of the world for riding your bike, and after a 100 last week the distance wasn't a problem. Very pleased to have ducked under 2 hours, 1.59.27, 3rd and good spoco points.

North Road 9.1, Brickendon, Tuesday 15th July

A debut ride in the club's name, if not colours yet, for new member Adam St. John Clarke, who is getting the hang of it and improved by 40 seconds on his pre-Park time with 26.25. I did 21.36, full result always appears promptly on the north road site. Good fun, highly recomended training too.

Norlond 25, F12 circuit, Guilden Morden, Saturday 19th July

The Club Summer 25, a spoco se and Millenium trophy counter, a must do event surely? Well me and Ian Bibby thought so, Ian after having had his E2 entry returned. And what with the wind and the mercifully brief showers, a sporting circuit was definitely the place to be. We both enjoyed it and got proper stuck in to the headwind and the drags. I got the win with 59.07, Ian did 1.03, well up the result board. Shame we didn't have a third rider for the team. Would also be a shame if this event goes as seems likely, can you lobby for us on this one Colin? It's a good little circuit, safe and challenging.

 Colchester Rovers 47 - E22/47 - Peldon Essex

Great course, lots of fun, twists and turns. Good conditions too, the rain held off, just, and there was a breeze that made the leg from Tiptree to Maldon sticky but was a help on the twisty road back up. I came 3rd, 1.53.14. Spoco!

 Team Cambridge E2/10 2nd August

This one was halted by a sudden and torrential downpour that reduced visibility down to a few yards. Not before Ian Bibby was out on the road unfortunately for him!  He was one of about 5 finishers, whose time won’t count. He reassures us it wasn’t a PB!

July 27th

Some quite old news in this catch-up as I have been away

Leo RC 30  Saturday 28th June   E2/30

Generally reckoned to be the fastest 30 available but not on that day as the wind blew. I managed 1.12.23, Ian Bibby, 1.13.29. Dan Northover managed to go off course. He wasn’t the only one – even the winner managed a detour. But none toured quite so far as our Dan. If you want to know where the road at FourWentways really goes, Dan is your man.

Team Economic Energy E2/10 12th July

Still windy , Ian Bibby’s heard was broken by the gales and struggled to a forgettable 24.05.  I was happier with  22.30.

Odam chaos

The last two rounds have now been lost to road works. Let’s hope for better this week. A few of us managed to make something of the evening two weks ago when we gatecrashed the Whitewebbs event on the nearby F20. Times there were a dead heat between me and  Ian this time  - 21.45. we were both pipped by Neal Marrin in 21.39 and Tom Boulton suffered the agonies of cramp and DNF’d.

BC Masters Track Championships. Newport Velodrome

A great weekend for our team, Ian Bibby, Louise and myself, riding a variety of events over the two day meeting. Competition was extremely fierce and standards were high so no medals this year. The nearest was Louise in the Individual Pursuit. She woke up halfway round the 2000 metres and started to make up some significant early losses, eventually missing Bronze by 300ths of a second.

Vince has some pictures I believe, so maybe we’ll post them later.

Various 100 mile TTs around the country

I know Dave and Hugh spent a few weeks recently chasing each other around at this distance and running each other very close. I think Hugh must have got fed up first because he eventually left Dave to record a sub 4 hour somewhere and take the fastest club 100 of the year.

Finsbury Park Road Race – 1 June 2008

Two races run over the Blackmore course in Essex, under the LVRC regulations.

Sid Lovatt, the race organiser, would like to thank all those that helped on the day, esprecially those from outside  the 'Park'

Due to the entries on the line and generous donations from helpers we were able to offer what was considered to be a good prize list.

I think that we can also claim, by offering a free entry to any non LVRC member joining on the day, an addition of 3 new LVRC members plus renewals from 2 lapsed members.

May 14th Round up

Here’s the latest round up of results and news including a new club record

Odam Series Club 10s. Round Two Wednesday 7th

Vince has written…

With afternoon temperatures over 25c, novice riders looked forward to fast times, but older and wiser heads knew differently and would have welcomed a shower, however brief. And so it proved as the regulars were up to 30 secs off their expected pace; with the exception of Malcolm Steer who swapped his MG setup for a significant number of extra sprockets and bagged 10 points.

Craig Simpson nipped round in 20:36 to put more than two minutes into the best ‘Parker’, Chris Lodge, (no surprise there then). Gray Turnock looks a likely bet for the Odam handicap if he can fight off last years winner (and still improving), Dan Northover and a resurgent Malcolm Steer. Will Neil Collingbourne upgrade to full member and join the fun?

15 riders reported to the starter and the ‘old git’ might need an assistant if numbers continue to increase

Shaftesbury 10 E2/10 Saturday 10th

Nice and warm, a windless enough day, an afternoon event and a fast course (it had even been resurfaced in places from the last time I rode)…it had to happen one day!

Check out these times : Dave Kendall 20m 05s, Hugh Vivian 20m 34s. !!!!         I managed 21m 23s  and that was enough for a new Club Men’s Team Record of 1h 2m 2s, slicing nearly two minutes of the old mark set in 1998.

Louise and Helen weren’t exactly hanging about either with 23m 13s and 23m 30s

Norlond 30 F1/30 Sunday 11th

Hugh was the organiser of this one for the Association. Thanks go to him for a successful running of the event. Not as good a day as it looked by many riders accounts. Here are the times for our lot:

Tom Boulton 1.13.32, Dan  Northover 1.10.07, Dave Kendall 1.08.21, Malcolm  Steer 1.10.33 and Ian Bibby 1.10.48 (3rd handicap)

Dick Curtis

Never mind club records though. Member Dick Curtis was notching up his 100th Birthday last Saturday!

Congratulations from us all.

Welwyn Track League Friday 9th

A huge turn out on Friday night that included Louise, Neal Marrin, Ian Bibby and myself. Enough riders out there to necessitate overflow events and plenty of excitement. Some points picked up in the 10 lap points race for us all but no placings when all was reckoned up. Most of the  rest of the races were spent keeping out of trouble or committing cardinal errors like going off too fast in the block pursuit (why did I do that????)

May 6th round up

Colchester Rovers 50, E7/50 Sunday 27th April

Up bright and early for the drive down to nearly the seaside, a steady south wind but dry. Gray Turnock didn't start leaving 5 of us. This is a tough course but a good one to get in early season I always think. Times were roughly, Dave Kendall 2.01.43, 5th or 6th, me 2.03.09, Neal Marrin 2.10, Dan Northover 2.12 and Helen Boatman 2.17. The Colchester must take some credit as there are 8 turns to marshal and they had about 10 riders in it as well. We all managed to stay on course this time, unlike Lee Bark who apparently would have won if he hadn't muddled which lap he was on leaving Paul Smith to win with a 1.57, first woman was Claire Ella, 2.09, doubt there'll be that much of a gap once Helen gets going properly.

Icknield RC F1/25 Sunday 4th May

A surprisingly good day for this one that caught us unawares. Quite warm and no particular wind but we’d all forgotten what a good day feels like and didn’t take full advantage. Poor old Hugh was off mega early and soon found himself first man on the road so a good ride from him.

Times were: Dave Kendall 54.31, Hugh 56.21, Me 58.35, Tom Boulton 1.01.41 and Louise 1.02.41.

Malcolm had invested in some serious trick upgrades to his TT bike but his tyres weren’t among them and he punctured giving him a long walk down the A1. Oh well, as I said, it was a nice morning for it.

Sunday afternoon ECCA E91/25.

Another muggy day, not too much wind and largely rainfree. This one was no longer a SPOCO counter, which took the edge off the competition, but still a race is a race. Dave Kendall suffered in the latter part to go round in 58:13, and Dan Northover in his first 25 knocked out a superb 1:00:40; a really good ride on this tough course
